Do boys and girls use technology differently? I just got finished working on a story about this issue and found that the research on this topic is quite muddled. Do you seen any anecdotal differences between genders when it comes to technology use...

Do You Have What It Takes?

Or know someone who does? The National School Boards Association’s Technology Leadership Network is looking for 20 educators who embrace the power of technology to enhance learning for students, inspire colleagues, transform operations, or engage parents and community members. The "20 to Watch" who are chosen will be honored just before NSBA's T+L Conference in Seattle, Wash. at a pre-conference reception Oct. 27. What do you think the criteria should be to make the list? What factors should the… Continue

Musings on the State of IT in Education

After attending his first NECC conference this year, Ron Canuel, the director general of Canada’s Eastern Township School Board schools (who also happens to be a member of this site) wrote the following essay summing up his version of the state of IT in education. I’ve edited the piece for space, but I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts.

Did You Go To NECC?

If you did go to the recent National Educational Computing Conference in Texas, what did you see or hear that was interesting and that you might apply in your own school or district? Did you go to Digital Directions' panel on "The Knowledge Gap?" What did you think?

Students obviously adhere to the district's overall technology policy. Students at school do not have access to the social media sites (YouTube, Facebook, MySpace), but we are going to utilize these for prospective students and recognize many of our current students will view these from home. All of the safeguards such as turning comments off and approving friend requests before they go public have been set. We have done all of this without adopting new policies because our current district policy on the use of technology covers all of this and our staff and students are educated that anything online is public record.
We have a staff of three technology coordinators who work with the teachers and staff on educating them about how they can utilize these tools in a safe and effective way, and while some students do try to take advantage of it at times, for the most part they are cooperative, as are parents and the community.

This is a great idea for a Ning site! At Ohio Hi-Point Career Center we have embraced technology full-force! Our students each receive their own laptops and our entire campus is wireless. Our teachers integrate blogs, podcasts, and other educational technology in their lesson plans, and our marketing efforts are about to take full advantage of social media using Facebook, YouTube, Viddler, Linkedin, blogs, Twitter and more! I look forward to learning more on here!
